I couldn't find a pretty picture for you to match any of the links, so instead I give you this masterpiece of Marc Bolan with a Swan. You're welcome.

I'm kind of obsessed with New York City right now. My parents are there at the moment, & Apa & I are planning to go for a holiday this time next year. I'll have to make sure I rewatch How to Piss off Every New Yorker in 36 Seconds before I go to avoid any faux pas. (via Nubby Twiglet)

Again with feminism & art, Huffington Post has An Incredibly Frustrating Conversation. (via Ange)
"Sisterhood isn't sisterhood without mentors actually looking out for the next generation."
I don't eat bananas, but if I did I wouldn't buy Dole after reading this. They've since removed the Ethical Choice labels, but we'll wait & see if they change their practices also.

Head to Frank Stationary next time you need to buy a backpack or notebook. For every purchase you make the same item is donated to a New Zealand child in need. Their blog is pretty interesting too. (via Evie Kemp)

Air New Zealand are happy to appropriate Maori culture for its advertising campaigns, but won't allow it in its cabin crew. It is also telling that I found this story via former Race Relations Commissioner Joris de Bres, while current Race Relations Commissioner wouldn't comment.

Seven Days of Koko

Helping Papa in the kitchen.

"Where's your nose?"

The satisfaction of a job well done. That is an entire box of tissues.

Thus begins the annoying task of applying many layers of clothing to Koko before we leave the house. Damn weather!

Nothing cuter than a kid in a hood.

Sunday best & unimpressed.

Wearing all of the colours.

"Do you want permission to opt out of Facebook or Instagram or Pinterest or Vine? This is it."
Sarah-Rose's visit to the Fever Hospital is spooky and beautiful and awesome.

"I hate the concept of likeability—it gave us two terms of George Bush, whom a plurality of voters wanted to have a beer with, and Facebook. You’d unfriend a lot of people if you knew them as intimately and unsparingly as a good novel would. But not the ones you actually love."

"Fleetwood Mac: You’re reasonably well adjusted. Considering."
"She insists on doing standard kid stuff, even millions of people watch, judge, criticize, and assigning meaning to her every move—and it isn’t some tragic story. She doesn’t seem like a victim or a cautionary tale."

This is where I live. I love it! ~

100 New Recipes ~ Chocolate Cheesecake

Part of my Life List challenge to try 100 new recipes. Here's #7 ~ Chocolate Cheesecake.

A while back I bought a packet of those chocolate chip cookies that the supermarket sells; you know the ones, in resealable bags with a no brand name, homemade vibe. They look good, right? They weren't. They sat uneaten in our pantry for a couple of weeks, taunting me. Every time I craved a treat I would pull them out & then think better of it, remembering the disappointing awfulness. But I hate to be wasteful, & I knew that resealable bag would only keep them okay for a limited amount of time. So I decided to try a chocolate cheesecake, using the horrible biscuits as the base.

I'd never made a cheesecake before. To be honest, I was a little intimidated. Some of the recipes I'd looked up required the use of gelatine, & I just didn't want to go there. And then I found this recipe. It looked like it could be a winner. It was.

This cheesecake was incredibly simple to make, and it tasted divine. Definitely earned its 4.5 star rating. The Awful Biscuits were perfectly delightful as the base. Success!

Riders. Fascinating things.

I love this kitchen makeover (although I do wonder where the fridge now resides).

"Did Seth McFarlane really just sing a song about seeing women's boobs on film and reference four rape scenes?"

This karaoke couple had me crying with laughter. I love them! I wish I could invite them to my next party.

I had to pause halfway through this beautiful proposal story because I was about to start the ugly cry.

Hyperbole and a Half is back with a truly brilliant description of depression that should be required reading.
"At first, I'd try to explain that it's not really negativity or sadness anymore, it's more just this detached, meaningless fog where you can't feel anything about anything — even the things you love, even fun things — and you're horribly bored and lonely, but since you've lost your ability to connect with any of the things that would normally make you feel less bored and lonely, you're stuck in the boring, lonely, meaningless void without anything to distract you from how boring, lonely, and meaningless it is."

Wow. Angelina Jolie has had a double mastectomy. She writes about the experience here.
"On a personal note, I do not feel any less of a woman. I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity."

If you are a New Zealander you should be reading The Daily Blog. Seriously. Martyn Bradbury knocks it out of the park again with his piece on commercial radio, Dom Harvey & Aaron Gilmore.
"Part of Key’s success is that he has depoliticized the role of Prime Minister. He is relaxed about everything, he’s a 30 second youtube clip, a breakfast radio fart noise. It’s hard to debate 25% of children in poverty when the Prime Minister is juggling fish."
I WANT a glitter floor! (via Gala Darling)

You might find this kind of mundane, but I fould Emily's explanation on how she manages laundry in a household of six kids pretty interesting.

Filmmaker Sarah Polley has made an incredible personal documentary that looks so interesting ~

My Crushes ~ The University Years

Part four in the series of the gents who have been on the receiving end of my affections over the years. (Parts 1, 2 & 3.)

RYAN PHILLIPPE

Ryan Phillippe as Sebastian Valmont in Cruel Intentions, appearing at the top of the escalator in his blue shirt = The stuff my 19 year old dreams were made of.

DALLAS TAMAIRA

Dallas came into my life one summer's afternoon, when Fat Freddy's Drop played Whopper Chopper at Days Bay. He didn't leave my life for many, many years after that.

ANDREW BAIN

Look at him oozing bass player cool. I once met Andrew Bain at a party. He was wearing a t-shirt with 'MINT" written on it, and thereafter that was his codename. When you are stalking someone it is very important to give them a codename. I lived overseas when I was 20, and my friends sent me a photo of Mint that they had taken at a concert. I stuck it on my bedroom wall, and the guy I was seeing at them time would get jealous. Yes, Andrew Bain was my imaginary boyfriend.

JASON & JEREMY LONDON

These two count as one because I've never been able to tell them apart. Who cares which one was it was in Mallrats, it's a yes either way! Party of Five? Yes! Dazed and Confused? Yes! The Man in the Moon? Hell Yes!

TAYE DIGGS

I would gladly have lost my groove to have Taye Diggs get it back for me.

Fit & Feminist on women-only races.
"My enthusiasm for this race clearly illustrated for me that it wasn’t the “women-only” aspect of most women’s races that I had problems with. I’ll admit that part of me disliked the idea that women needed to be coddled and cajoled into doing something athletic by having their own super-speshul races, far from all the scary boys and men, but the truth is, being surrounded by thousands of women was actually one of the things I dug most about doing the women’s races. No, it was everything else about the races that left me feeling like the human embodiment of Feminist Hulk."

I've been getting more impatient and frustrated with Koko lately, so it was great to read this (via Coley Tangerina).
"But there are also many moments when I have no idea how I'm going to make it until their bedtime. The constant demands, the needs and the fighting are fingernails across the chalkboard every single day."

Why any Georgie Pie return will flop, as predicted by a former Georgie Pie worker.

I quite like viewing the annual photos of the Costume Institute Gala at the Met. There are always divine gowns to swoon over. This year the theme was punk, which made for some very cringe inducing outfits. Attendees either had some bizarre interpretation of the theme, or ignored it altogether (which actually is kind of punk). But a rare few got it right. My favourites were Sarah Jessica Parker, Giovanna Bataglia, Coco Rocha, Paloma Faith, Doutzen Kroes and Jamie Campbell Bower.
